SICK is an uproarious look at a family of germ-o-phobes who have severe allergies to everything from Cheez-Whiz and cleaning supplies to city air.  As prisoners inside their vacuum-sealed home and garbed in non-allergic clothing they live each day in terror that a stray mold spore or chemical will sneak in.  When Dad brings home one of his graduate students, the family’s fear crescendos -- with chaotic, comedic consequences.

Zayd Dohrn is definitely a hot young playwright to catch now.  He is a Lila Acheson Wallace Playwriting Fellow at Juilliard.  In addition to Southern Rep, his plays have been produced and developed at The Public Theater, Woolly Mammoth, Marin Theatre Co, South Coast Rep, The Alliance, Kitchen Dog, Magic Theatre, Berkshire Theatre Festival, American Theater Company, Boston Playwrights’ Theatre, New Jersey Rep, and Alchemy Theatre of Manhattan. He is a recipient of Lincoln Center’s Lecomte du Nouy Prize, the Sky Cooper Prize, the Jean Kennedy Smith Award, an IRNE for Best New Play, and residencies with Ars Nova, Chautauqua, and the Royal Court Theatre of London.

Hear a recent interview with the Playwright about the impetus for writing SICK and its productions in Dallas, New Jersey and New Orleans. The interview is produced by New Jersey Rep

The National New Play Network (NNPN) selected SICK to participate in the CONTINUED LIFE OF NEW PLAYS FUND.  Featured during NNPN's 2007 NATIONAL SHOWCASE OF NEW PLAYS, the play will have three successive “rolling” openings; Kitchen Dog Theater in Dallas and then New Jersey Rep, culminating with Southern Rep’s production.

Press on SICK
Already in Dallas, Dohrn’s SICK garnered mention on three Top-Ten Play Lists of 2008: “…a playwright with a big future” (Dallas Morning News); “…a young Edward Albee, daring to write humor that hints at danger inside American families” (Dallas Observer); and “…turn urbane family life upside down with absurdist flair. (Dallas Voice). The Dallas Morning News also did a great interview with Dohrn before the show opened there.

Southern Rep GOES GREEN!
Southern Rep is partnering with local environmental groups, like New Orleans’ own The Green Project, to go green on this production of SICK.  With the ambitious goal of using 75% recycled materials, SRT is not just giving lip service to this important issue.

Special GREEN Benefit Nights**
In support of the cause, Southern Rep is offering two special benefit performances that will include a talkback and after-show party, sponsored by Whole Foods Market. Thursday, March 12 benefits the Tulane Environmental Law Society. Friday, March 13 benefits the Gulf Restoration Network and The Alliance for Affordable Energy. A portion of the $23 ticket proceeds will go to support these vital organizations.

The goal is to approach the production elements with the Three R’s in mind: renew, reuse, recycle. The Theatre turned to Lonnie Schaffer who owns Strike It Green, a props, set and costume renter and recycler which serves the theatre and film industries. The Green Project is also on-board to consult on ways to make the production and Southern Rep more eco-conscious. The Green Project creatively promotes and encourages environmental sustainability in New Orleans through its recycling of building materials and paint, deconstruction of homes and salvaging of usable materials, plus being a great environmental reference resource for our entire area.
