Violinist turned playwright, Michael Hollinger, creates a witty and telling portrait of a high-caliber yet high-strung string quartet. OPUS explores power and glory, loyalty and madness... and what a girl's gotta do to play with the big boys. Mark Routhier, director of last season's sell-out hit THE SEAFARER, will helm this masterful piece.

"Sex, drugs and chamber music!"
- The New York Times

"It's unarguably theater at its finest."
- TheaterMania

"A taut, smart, thoroughly entertaining drama about that most rarified of heady glories."
- Newsday

"So entertaining and insightful that you'll never quite listen to a chamber music group the same way again."
- The NY Post

BIOGRAPHIES
Director Mark Routhier returns to Southern Rep following his Big Easy Award nominated direction of THE SEAFARER last season.  Routhier recently directed Yussef el Guindi’s JIHAD JONES AND THE KALASHNIKOV BABES (an NNPN Continued Life Project) for Golden Thread in San Francisco and at the LA Theatre Centre. Regionally, he’s worked with Orlando Shakespeare, The Kennedy Center and Marin Theatre Co. and has directed extensively in and around San Francisco. Also a playwright, Mark is a recipient of the Playground Emerging Playwrights Award. Until recently, he served as the Director of Artistic Development at Magic Theatre. He is the Chair of the National New Play Networks' Literary Managers. Mark received his MFA in Dramatic Writing from NYU.

Playwright Michael Hollinger received a Bachelor of Music in viola performance from Oberlin Conservatory and a Master of Arts in theatre from Villanova University, where he is now an assistant professor of theatre. Because of his background as a musician, Hollinger considers his plays compositions: characters are instruments, scenes are movements; tempo, rhythm, and dynamics are critical; and melody and counterpoint are always set in relief by rests--beats, pauses, the spaces in between. For PBS, Hollinger has written three short films and co-authored the feature-length PHILADELPHIA DIARY. His numerous awards include the Roger L. Stevens Award from the Fund for New American Plays, a Barrymore Award for Outstanding New Play and fellowships from the Independence Foundation, Mid-Atlantic Arts Foundation, and Pennsylvania Council on the Arts.
